Special post just for this drawing, even though I was eventually going to post a “Best of Draw Something” of my own drawings. This right here is one of the many things I’ve drawn in the app Draw Something. It was drawn sometime in late March, and initially posted to the Internet on my Facebook, then my Tumblr in this post.
To my knowledge, since then this drawing has been featured on Smosh, Yahoo!, and here as part of compilations.
And also stolen and claimed as this person’s own.
While I am happy people like this drawing, art theft is not the way to go about showing appreciation. And this is not the first Draw Something drawing of mine to be stolen. I don’t watermark my Draw Something doodles on purpose because I feel like they’re just ingame doodles. But I stand corrected and the dark corners of the Internet show me that in this day and age, people will steal anything as long as they can.
Don’t steal art. You’ll always be found out one way or another. Instead of trying to inflate your imaginary ego by stealing other people’s art, maybe you can actually go draw something of your own. Or read a book.

Last day of classes and I just so happened to have all 5 of my classes one last time today. It was not at all as sentimental as it sounds. Most of my ECE profs spent it cramming materials they couldn’t finish, and we just left the class as if we’d come back another day. It is also the end of Art for Engineers this term. I missed last week and it was reportedly on cartoon and caricature. This week was briefing on Modernism and Postmodernism, with a sculpting activity after. I was never a great sculptor and was never that interested, so I shan’t be posting photos… Haha. (They’re pretty ugly.)
Most of these hands here are the fleeting moments of my professors as they taught their last lesson, with the rest being me creeping on unsuspecting persons in the coffee shop after dinner. Special guest appearance by my Multimedia prof’s favourite sweater. 74/200 as of right now. :|
5 final exams away from graduation, no more drawing til after April 21st.

Previously on Art for Engineers! Lol ok no. This week’s topic was on the different traditional painting/drawing media. We went over everything from pencil acrylic watercolour oil pastel to some media I’ve never even heard of. (And hence cannot name, haha.) Also had a bit of sculpting media. It was very interesting! Talked about the pros and cons of each, how they work, etc. In the end, the activity was drawing with white conte (compressed graphite or charcoal mixed with wax or clay — I just pulled this off of Wiki). I’ve never used conte before and much less drawing in only highlights. We had the option of drawing a person or weird objects (via the still life session), I chose to draw portraits because I like them. In hindsight for the first time of using conte and drawing in highlights though, objects probably would’ve been better…
Most people chose objects though, and I ended up drawing the instructor because I had no partner. (/forever alone) The above picture is my very first attempt, and it is much harder than I thought… Especially the eye. I usually draw in terms of shades and highlights last. Thus if I see a middle tone I think in terms of how dark it is and not how light it is. In struggling to see the highlights the proportions suffered, added with the fact that you can’t erase after making a mistake, this drawing was a disaster lololol. (So bad I didn’t even sign it hahaha)

Since the first drawing was a lost cause, I took a new sheet of paper and started all over. This time it was easier because I’ve sort of had a grasp on how conte works, my eyes were sorta used to seeing in highlights now, and the instructor sat still for this one instead of looking up and down (he was drawing me when I drew the first drawing of him), which made my life a LOT easier. As you can see this one is a lot better! And I actually spent less time on this drawing than the first one, which was around 30min. Still doesn’t quite look like him (I said it looks like his cousin lol) but it looks like some sort of human being now, haha. If I were given a third try, I think I could make it actually look like him. But I had to go to class. ;(
Everyone else who chose to draw objects had generally really good looking drawings, and some new faces showed up. Male/female ratio was again almost even, but slightly more girls. (I don’t know why I feel the need to report this lol.)
IN OTHER NEWS though, I’ve been sooooo addicted to Draw Something it’s insane. I’m afraid to give out my username now because I’m very close to the max games allowed, which is something like 50. Although you can probably guess what it is if you follow me enough, haha. It’s very good practice and I’m having a lot of fun with it. Expect a “Best of Draw Something” post in the future.
Lastly yesterday was the ECE Symposium, in which we showcase a design project we slaved over 12 months for, along with a couple of comrades. It was 12 hours long and I was freaking out in the morning, but as people came by and showed interest in our project my mood gradually fixed itself and it was almost fun, if we didn’t have to stand for so long. Some people were very enthusiastic about it, and was all “Omg I’m so interested in your project! I saw the poster yesterday and wanted to come by!” which surprised my entire team lollllll. At the end of it all, I’m just glad this 4th year design project business is over. Last stretch til graduation!!

Another session of Art for Engineers yesterday, still life this time. Talked a bit about symbolism and looked at a couple of still life paintings from fruits, flowers, glassware, and vanitas. Then we were given this box of stuff where we had to choose something oddly shaped, something shiny, something matte, and something transparent to draw. Previous exercises were always 20min ish, this time we were given 20min to plan out the drawing, try a couple of compositions, and spend an hour drawing the final one. My sketch above is once again incomplete because I had to run off to class. I was going to finish it when I got home but screw that… was tired and I’d have to draw in the living room for a big enough surface. Was fun though!

None of the girls who joined later wanted to draw my composition and chose to draw the dude’s next to me. 8′(
I missed last week’s session due to, yet again, midterms. (My midterms are never going to end. 7th one this Friday!) Allegedly it was figure drawing last week, noooooooooo T____T No nakie models though, it was the instructor person. Although if it were naked people (girls) the entire faculty would prob show up, just sayin.
Also interesting to note that yesterday’s session had mostly new faces from the first time I went. Yet each time, most of the crowd is girls. There are guys, and the instructor himself is male, but a good 80-90% of the students are girls. Given engineering’s girl to guy ratio (or lack of?), this is pretty amazing. So engineering girls are more likely to enjoy drawing than engineering guys?
Anyway. I hang these drawings up on my wall because I’ve no place to put them. It’s a shame there’s only 3 more sessions left. I would’ve liked to have a room of drawings. No one would believe I was in Engineering if they walked into my room.

Totoro says one does not simply walk into an Engineering student’s room.

Something new in Engineering this year is this “Visual Art and Design for Engineers” … club/class/studio sorta thing. Supposed to be “studio art lessons” for Engineers, made free since it’s being paid for by the Engineering Dean or something. Trippy as hell because I’ve had so many Engineering tutorials in that classroom. +_+
There’s been 2 sessions so far but I only went to this week’s due to midterms. It’s pretty much a bit of “lecture” in the beginning and then you have drawing activities. This week’s was a brief history on Renaissance art, and then a bit about composition and -/+ space and whatnot. The activity was to get you to see the shape and different tones by drawing with one tone, then two tones, then full on blending etc. About 20minutes for each. Clearly as you can see! I do not know of single or dual tones! For shame. (I didn’t draw the third full on blending one coz I had to run to class. ;_;) It was still enjoyable though, been a long time since I had live models to draw from. A bit more challenging than photos because some people just can’t stay still… cough.
As for the instructor/TA person, I missed the first session in which he introduced himself but it sounds like he’s an engineer who’s had a couple of artsy/design jobs. He used to be an armour smith! So cool. I kinda wished it was more studio lesson though, like giving us tips and suggestions while drawing. He just kinda sat there and watched from afar. But I guess that’s expecting too much from a free “art for engineers” club? Nonetheless it was nice seeing other engineers who liked to draw. Didn’t get to make any new friends coz I was in a hurry lol maybe next time. I wanna see if Mechanical Engineers actually draw better than us non-mechies. :P ECE REPRESENTTTT
Okay I’m done rambling. Overall, very nice environment and weekly practice. Wish they had this before I got to my last semester of school.
